No Back up and risk of / events of occasional burn-outs may happen quite easy.

Doing too much or trying to be everywhere or growing social media might cause that. Remmeber to be careful and know your limits, especially if you are working on the side.

Great advice. This is why I like picking one offer, one distribution channel.

You’re absolutely right and trying to master every social platform plus email plus a blog plus video usually leads to poor results and burnout. Thanks for sharing!

When I started my first business I made the same mistake that most people do - I built a business that looked like my jobs had.

It wasn't really my fault, I did it because I hadn't ever been close with any successful entrepreneurs and most influencers talk bull online.

It took me years to realise that building a business required me to do things that are completely different to what I would do in a work situation. Most of the best advice for entrepreneurs is super counterintuitive.

I make excellent money now and only work about 12 hours a week, but it took me years to get to this point. I wish I knew then what I know now because it really didn't need to be so hard.

The one-person business model forces clarity: if it doesn’t scale without staff, it’s not a system it’s a bottleneck.

In the old days of the internet, making great money online was possible, but not today unless you're a lucky unicorn. And I've known and worked with a lot of internet celebrities who never got wealthy, even when that WiFi pipeline was available. Did they make a fantastic living? You bet. But not wealthy.

Expand full comment
Tom Blake's avatar

I think it depends on timing and then how you follow up. I've met so many young people who have made anywhere from $100K to $1M+ online in a few years. Imagine taking that money, or even half of it, and dumping it into the market. Youre wealthy after a few decades with this formula. So really I think online, one person businesses are a ramp to financial independence and wealth.

I don't disagree that there are money-making possibilities in the online world, but I'd like to know who those people are, because that is rare -- unless they were at the right place at the right time, selling magic beans to others, or showing their body on OnlyFans.

In my experience (I've been online since 2004 and taught the same things you share over and over again), most people never get wealthy, regardless of what business they launch. They are lucky to pay their bills. And even when they follow a "proven" blueprint, the chances are slim, especially when those blueprints and strategies are outdated because technology and algorithms are always changing.

Perhaps I'm just cynical now from watching and teaching thousands of people buy into this WiFi Millionaire ideology, then crash and burn, losing everything in the process, but unless you are the 1%, you won't make that kind of money with dropshipping, affiliate fees, blogging, and all the other "simple" businesses online.

If people these days want to hedge their bets on making a sustainable living, get offline and learn a trade like plumbing or carpentry. There's a huge demand, you can be paid in cash, and you won't lose your job to AI.

Just my two cents.

Ahh I see your point now! Thanks for clarifying. I definitely agree that many online business models have few who strike it big and capture a lot of the market, and many crash and burn. But I guess for all of human history, not everyone becomes wealthy and that's just how distribution works.

I still think it's worth trying, and while holding down your day job so there's less crashing and burning. And for people living in 2nd and 3rd world, finding some way to earn a little bit of side USD can go a massive way.

Definitely agree trades and technical, real world jobs are an excellent path that more young people should also consider. Thanks for sharing James!

FWIW, I'm not trying to be combative in my response, but sharing realistic expectations with those who seek to find their fortune online.

Even though technology has made launching businesses so easy, the work is hard and a daily grind. You have to be committed and focused, as well as have luck involved, to achieve the big payoff.

I agree! It's worthwhile to find ways to grow your wealth, and even if it's not hundreds of thousands of dollars, it adds up, especially if you're investing minimal time. Yes, keep your job as you do it, as well. That is the smart way.

As long as people remember it doesn't usually happen like the fairytale we hear, that's what is important.

Thanks for letting me share.

WTF you said you could teach it. Now you’re saying the opposite.

Fuck you scammer!

Expand full comment
Tom Blake's avatar

All of this is teachable. I'm not saying the opposite. Most businesses that launch fail within a couple of years. That doesn't mean it's not worth launching businesses.

You either try and learn, reiterate, eventually succeed or you throw your hands up and complain / never develop. Choice is yours. I have a guess which path you usually take.

I agree with you 100%. We need people to be “doers” in human jobs, utilizing human skills, as AI eliminates those who are the “thinkers” because they won’t see it coming, as their identity is tied to being smart, but not necessarily useful.

The internet and technology have changed my life. They have allowed me to earn a great living from anywhere for over 25 years and given me a freedom I never expected. Yet all good things come to an end, and with all the rapid developments and changes, those days of earning WiFi riches are mostly gone and will continue to decline for now. We need to adapt and do it quickly.

The additional downside to all of this is that we have become "real life" ignorant because most people cannot do the basic tasks that many used to be able to do -- like home maintenance, growing food, fixing machines, or finding their way around using an old school map. For those of us who can offer services beyond the machine and AI, we have a better chance at survival.

While I agree that online money-making programs and ideologies like this are not as effective as they used to be, and often a scam to teach people how to teach other people to make money, some strategies can still work -- though I highly doubt anyone will ever make the "six figure" payoff with them.

I also don't think it's necessary to be so aggressive and hateful, even when we disagree with the author or other people's opinions or beliefs.
